Who is with me on requiring that the Iowa legislature pass a law saying that local gov'ts can decide to ban smoking in public places? Who is with me in saying Iowa City should have at least one bar that remains non-smoking ALL of the time? Because to my way of thinking, yes, I could just stay home and not go to bars at all because of the health risks and nasty aspects of it. Well, sure, but then when would I get to see my friends? Iowa City should have at least one place that I can go, and sit and have a drink (if I want) or at the very least sit and converse with my friends without having to soak up second hand smoke, and all the horrible icky side effects I get. I am allergic. Seriously allergic to cigarette smoke. If there was an alternative place for my friends to go out downtown, where I could join them without suffering, I probably would. I can't even go and play pool anywhere past nine pm in this town without being exposed to it. I can't go bowling without being exposed to it. So I ask, where is the place that if my friends really want to see ME, they'll come? The vis versa happens often, I go to the bars because this is where my friends hang out when they come home from overseas, and then, I suffer for wanting to spend time catching up with them. Well, screw that. Donnelly's was smoke free, for awhile, and now, they allow smoking after 10 pm, so I can't go there any more. It is frustrating to say the least. I can talk my non-smoking friends into going there with me to hang out, because drink prices are the same as other places too. However, now where will I get people to go who want to go dancing? Donnelly's doesn't have a dance floor. The Mill will have non-smoking events for the back room (yay for wylde nept performing smoke free concerts) which is awesome. I will gladly go there and not subject myself to smelling like an ashtray when i get home, and having to shower immediatly upon my return to my home.
Also, I think it's really rude for people that know of someone's allergies, to continue to smoke right in front of them, or in their face specifically. It would be the same thing as feeding strawberries to someone who is allergic to strawberries. Actually no, that's a little wrong. The person allergic to strawberries can ask and be told strawberries are in the food and then not have to eat it. If I ask a smoker to not smoke around me, and they don't oblige me, what's my course of action? I have to leave the establishment. I'd be fine with just leaving the establishment and going somewhere else, if such a place existed that had the same other amenities sans smoking. It's like telling someone who is a recovering alcoholic that they can not go out to any bar anywhere because there is always going to be drinks served to people around them. Where is their bar that doesn't serve alcoholic drinks, where they can go and not be tempted? Answer is, there isn't. No bar would survive without serving the drinks people want, and that's alcoholic. Sadly, that has become the case with bars for smoking also. No bar in this area can feel as though they do as much business and make as much profit if they don't allow smoking. I understand in some sense the "discrimination" claim that smokers may make if suddenly they can't smoke in a bar, however, what about the discrimination that we feel for not being able to find a place where such activities DON"T occur?
There are two places in Coralville that are non-smoking resturaunts. Mondo's and Sluggers. People, GO THERE!!! Support local establishments that choose to be smoke-free.
And I'm done with the rant for the day. Feel free to tell me your thoughts folks...

Destruction in my Hometown

My hometown of Iowa City, Iowa was hit by two F2 tornadoes on Thursday night. I wasn't planning to head home for the Easter holiday - and when I'd called my mom to mkae sure they were okay, she said "You know, you were surely invited to come home if you wanted." I may have done so, and been in IC on Thursday night, if I wasn't already traveling elsewheres. It was hard not to get a bit emotional when I was trying to get the most current updates via the Internet into the morning hours on Friday. The images are pretty intense, of overturned cars, buildings without roofs, places I've visited many times over my years are no longer existing. But, the picture I've just painted in your minds may be quite bleak, and actually Iowa City and its residents were tremendously lucky. There were only minor injuries reported, and one death south of the city due to another tornado. My heart goes out to the family and relatives of that woman. Most of the people that I know didn't suffer any damage or injuries at all, though a former boss did have her car crushed and roof blown off, and friends of other people I know had damage to their cars as well. It makes me wish I was back in Iowa City this week though, so that I could help with the clean-up efforts and pitch in where people need help, either by volunteering with the Red Cross for the relief efforts or something else. I'll be back there in a few weeks though - and then I can do just that.

What a strange and wild week has passed before me. There were some major highs, and some major lows. Highlights definately included cutting off most of my hair then going out with some friends who didn't even recognize me, Jaime's wedding, Iowa FB's win, a lovely wine party hosted by a good friend. yay for visits from Iowa friends to B-town as well :)
The downsides? well, we'll see what happens with those. ... hope all is well with everyone else...and I'm out.

The worst week in my life so far at SLIS this semester. I HATE when i let other people down!!!!! I must learn to just get over it I guess. pathfinder is done...it's done. that's what counts. I need to get my ass into school gear more though...going home to iowa this weekend...like the stream of consciencousness?...it's jaimes wedding...taking a Chi-town folk...will party much with friends at home...destress...
okay, im done with that. I"m totally over it, as trac would say.
grr. arrrggg. hope IA is worth it. I need to let out some of this tension, so anyone that reads this blog and is in IC this weekend, FAC will be happening ;) and the bars after that.

listening to: Counting Crows August and Everything After

Kind of fitting to be listening to an album titled August and Everything After, while I contemplate just what might be out there for me after this August. What lies in store for me at what I've started to call my adoptive home that is three states away?
This is such a rough sort of transitional time for me I think, mostly because I feel so disjointed about where I am in my life, and where I want to be, or if I even really think I know where I want to be. Case and point - I have my life scattered in three places. A storage unit in Indiana, a storage unit in Iowa, and then at my parent's home here. It's just strange to use the term scattered, but I think in a way, my head feels that it's also somewhat scattered now.

My birthday was a huge success by all accounts of the attendees who cared to share their thoughts on the event. I am blessed with some absolutely wonderful and thoughtful friends and family, not only those that attended the little fete I threw here at my folks, but the many friends and family that sent well wishes via phone calls and emails. Perhaps that's what leads me to feel so connected and distant at the same time. I can not tell you the immense pleasure I get from having people remember me, and remembering to call or contact me, even if it's only one day a year for my birthday. I pride myself in being able to keep in touch with the friends of the past, so that I can continue to keep them as friends in the present and future. So finding e-cards from friends in Nebraska that I haven't seen in probably three years, or talked to at least since christmas is really nice and surprising. realizing that I've gained a whole new group of people who care about me and what goes on in my life and how I'm feeling and what I'll be doing to celebrate also makes me feel so loved and such love for the Bloomington crew.

At the same time, it's going to be really really really hard to go back there. It's nothing against my friends at school, because they are fantastic, and I am really looking forward to my one bedroom place, and many movie nights and japanese food. But, at the same time, I think I harken back to an earlier post from the summer. Upon initially coming home, i was apprehensive about how much I've changed, how much my friends from IC have changed, and also, to some extent how well I'd fit back into this life I used to have. Well, it's interesting, because I see now how my life could continue to be here in Iowa City. Also an earlier post was relating to my sense of comfortable friendships here, and there is something really great about people who simply have alot of ammunition with which to make fun of you, and you know they aren't judging you, but just enjoy your company. It's really quite bittersweet. I am going to miss my friends so terribly when i move back, as well as my parents. I'm not taking for granted the last few days I have to spend here with them. And hopefully many of them will take me up on my invitation to come and visit me in B-town and explore the campus/brown county/indy with me.
I know a part of me is reluctant to go back simply because it will be a switch from calling about 20 ppl to see what they are doing each night, to calling one for a study session. My grad school life and my "summer" me life are on such opposite ends of the spectrum. Here, I am going out each night or staying up late, playing video games, or watching movies with friends, then working in the mornings (or whatever random hours at barnes and noble) and then doing it all again the next day. it's become such a comfortable existence so quickly. It's hard to believe that almost three whole months have gone by already. At IU my life also consists of working, but my nights are also filled with working and studying and everything school-related. And only a few choice ppl to call, so I guess I know what is in store for me for this August and Everything After.

I just hope there are good things on the horizon back in B-town to help me get back into the swing of things quickly, because I don't want to be homesick for Iowa all over again. It's soo easy to fall back into a comfortable pattern with the people that know you best, it's like you pick up where you left off and nothing has changed. I realized the other night that I actually came back to Iowa 5 times while i was technically living in Indiana. I don't know if that's alot or a little for a recently turned 24 year old who was spending her first real year away from her hometown. Looking back on the year as a whole there were many moments that I'd wished I'd stayed in Iowa. It's sort of sad to admit, but at the same time I think somewhat healthy. these were of course times when i was dealing with rougher issues and drama at schoool, that of course, make you want to "run home to mommy" - but ya know, in the grand scheme of things, I survived. That is most important I think. Survival. So perhaps all that August and Everything After will hold for me this time around in a hope for survival and for better things ahead. Or if nothing else at least a few phonecalls from friends are around the bend.

Well, I have been back in Iowa for almost two full weeks now. It has been a very good experience to readjust to life over here. I am loving my internship so far, Rijn is awesome and I am learning some really cool things, and I just got a call to interview at Barnes and Noble on Wed. so everyone wish me luck with that! (how totally awesome would it be to work with books and get paid? haha, oh wait...that's what my REAL career is going to be anyways! hehe, perhaps that's why I'm worthy of an interview. Hopefully they won't care that i"m only going to be around in the summer, and only want part time...well keep your fingers crossed anyways okay?). Let's see...other things....readjustment...well it has been really nice to see the Iowa friends again. There is something quite wonderful in the simple pleasure I take in hanging out with certain people that i have great chemistry with, so that we can spend an entire evening hanging out and in a very Seinfeldian sort of way, conduct a "show about nothing." Seriously, I hadn't laughed sooo hard in ages, as I did last week at perkins. It felt so good to just gel with them again. :) I miss my b-town girls and boys already too, because they are awesome as well, but there is something to be said for hanging out with people that, for all practical purposes have all sorts of "ammo" against you from previous knowledge to make fun of you with. Ah, the joys of being able to laugh at yourself. Particularly, from the bowling alley, the first night of my return, when I was dead tired and dragged my butt over because it was MY idea to go bowling earlier in the day, for when I got back to town, but soo tired I barely knew what was going on. Needless to say my comment of "I left the deathstars in the other duffelbag" is now living in infamy. Not to mention "what happens when you step on a dead cow?" (from the perkins evening) to which I replied "It stays dead?"
Not all of this homeward venture has been rosy though, as I've realized a few more things about myself that i need to work on. Like jealousy. I've always thought it such a stupid emotion, but I am beginning to understand the complexities and different types of jealousy that exist, and hopefully will discover how to better deal with them from an internal standpoint. But for the most part, life is fairly coposetic..(and I STILL can't spell for anything) So that's the newest update. peace!

Iowa, oh, Iowa

Well, I have been back in Iowa now for a few days. I realize even though B-town isn't that much further "south" it had been alot warmer...at least 15degrees, which was MUCH warmer compared to the 15-20 degree range in IA right now. I have complained about this to the Iowa friends, and they all agree, it's freakin cold here, and we all want to boycott cold weather! However, it has not snowed yet, so I guess that's a plus.
Most of my friends here are still in the midst of their finals week, I feel sorta bad to steal them away from their studies to hang out with me, and I serve as this great distraction. At least most of them welcome a break from the insanity that is studying for finals - ah I remember it soo well - thank goodness none for me this time around - next sem will probably kick my ass enough to make up for it though.
I have already been in touch with a few of the Indiana friends, and will hopefully get out some christmas cards before the end of the week. I have extreme empathy for one in particular as she's just gotten some really frustrating news related to a class. I wish I could help her out more, but hopefully something good will come out of it. She is very bright, a sweetheart, and a super gal, so it always sucks when disappointing things like this happy to the people who least deserve it. Karma be damned on that!
I drove back on Sat morn, after having stayed up way too late friday night, but for a good reason, Tanya and I went to tutto benne, which was lots of fun, I had grilled artichokes, yummy, and some wine. Then we went out and played pool and Art joined us. I turned down a shot from a guy that offered, and told him to give it to the graduating girl instead. It was pretty funny. After a few rounds of pool we just sat and discussed alot of different things, which was lots of fun for me, because I got to know Art a lill better, and Tanya was able to get sufficently wasted as planned. We went back to Art's place for awhile for afterhours which was also fun. Then I got three hrs of sleep and packed, and drove back to IA. I was glad Trac and I got Starbucks b.f I went for dinner, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to hang out so late, or stay awake on the drive home either.
I did fall asleep pretty quickly after getting back into town here. ate dinner w. the folks, watched a movie and then slept...missing a few invites to hangout. Last night we went out to the bars for awhile, I drove so didn't drink, but I had fun hanging out with the friends there...though I would have liked to have danced more, because I didn't work out yesterday at all. I have been trying to be better about doing at least 30 minutes a day in the hopes to get more muscle tone, which means I"ve also been lifting, and hah, a lill sore from that! If you haven't seen the movie SAVED, I highly recommend, as long as you can take a good look at the crazy religious zealouts out there, and take it all with a grain of salt, as they say, especially good if you are like me, and enjoy the sort of sadistic dark humor comedies. okies, well I will end this now, because I am off to join pete at house of aromas for a cheesecake latte and some catching up! hope you've all been able to stay somewhat WARM out there!

Turkey Break

So, now that my paper is finished, and all stappled and read to turn in, I have to do a few more homework assignments tonight, and attend class in the morning, and THEN, fun coffee time with Traci and THEN, driving back to Iowa City. I wantedt og et home earlier, so I'm missing class on monday, mostly cause mom was in a car accident - though she's okay, i feel like i should go a bit earlier if i can to make sure she's REALLY okay, and not just saying so, so that i"ll stay for class like I'm posed to. I'm looking forward to partying with the iowa city folks again for an extended weekend instead of the rushed visit last time - though mostly Im looking forward to a break from grad school life and the chance to actually relax and watch amovie or two and visit and chill and so forth and so on. I"m hoping that everyone else has a great holiday too!

Groovin' in B-town

Listening to: Big Fat VooDoo Daddy
So, after moving out here from Iowa for the whole "higher higher" education thing, I figured there would be some sort of epihany in my soul or my mind where I'd realize that I never want to live in Iowa City again, that I'm destined to travel the world doing interesting things and will never again settle down and live in one place for a long time. That isn't exactly the case though. As I start to look for possible internships for this summer, the possibilities are endless, Washington, D.C. Foldger Shakespeare Library, Chicago Art Institute, hell I could even go out to California, IF I didn't need money. Reality has this way of crushing dreams huh? 97% or so of library internships aren't paid positons and don't offer housing or living stipends either. I'd really like to be in Chicago this summer. I guess I'm still a Midwestern gal at heart in that respect. I could imagine waking up every day and being excited to go to work in a library situated in the Art Institute, take the subway down, or walk past galleries and shops to get there. Then get to enter through the "staff" doors and to walk past famous glorious works of art EVERYDAY! How wonderful would that be? Then, get to sit at a reference desk and answer patron questions about different artists, works of art, or where to find information on a certain architect. I think that would be a perfect fit for me. Actually, collection development and management would be a perfect fit for me too (perhaps this is because I did this at the health sciences lib at the U I for 5 years, and that I'm taking classes in both reference librarianship and collection development this semester) but either way, the setting and environment would be great. Heck, I'd even subject myself to cataloging all day (sorry Christa- it's your cup of tea, not mine) in order to be there. So, that whole, needing to make money to afford my education does rear its ugly head. Perhaps though, I can figure something out.
I guess I still haven't lost that belief that if I try hard enough something good will come my way and be right for me...I already know that is the case for the move to Bloomington. It has definately been the right move for me to make in my life. As nervous as I was to come here and start out again, after 22 years in the same town I grew up in, with the same core group of friends I've had since highschool and even elementary and then adding to that core...I've had to branch out and meet new people that I knew nothing about before saying "hello" I think there is something to be said for that philosophy of "throwing yourself into a new and exciting situation, where you are forced to bond with people over the smallest of things, like, a love of popcorn, or many other commonalities you discover through small talk, until you realize that these people are great. I already feel lucky that, even if I haven't met the entire human composition of my graduate program , I have met, those that I believe are some of the best elements it has to offer. As for the rest of the IU population, I've got a few from the dorm that are also steller girls that I already consider friends.
I worry some that the folks back in IA will forget about me...I feel like if I'm always the one that calls to see how they are doing, they will get annoyed and stop answering the phone when my name comes up, figuring that, as far away as I am (only six hrs) I'm still far enough away that they'll get tired of my pesky questions. When I went home the other weekend I was comforted to know that not much has changed in that town in the six weeks since I left. One of the restaurants changed names, apparently there's a starbucks in the mall now, and my friends, well, they remain the fabulous IC folks I remember them to be. So I guess if I have to be at home this summer, making money instead of in Chicago doing the internship it won't be entirely bad, I'll still have great people to spend the after hours with!
