I've seen the ending to Casablanca at least 3 times. I always seem to catch it playing on some television station right as Bergman is tearful, and Bogart on the tarmac doing his oh so very selfless, chivalrous thing. Of course I did not understand his actions as benevolent until all the pieces fit together by watching the whole film.
This was also the first film on my AFI list that I watched on the projection sceen in my basement and with 3 other people. Thanks for joining in guys. ;) (was contemplating cooking couscous and honeycakes)
So, first off, I've got to say, I hadn't known that the song with the lyrics "a kiss is just a kiss" was from Casablanca. (can we say Sleepless in Seattle and a whole ton of other romantic movies that have since used this?)
Another familiar plot line. Woman falls in love with another man, when she believes her husband is dead. I called this as soon as Ilsa walks into Rick's. Can you say Pearl Harbor? (same time period...coincidence? I think not..."of all the gin joints...")
Anyways, I can understand why this film is included in every Film 101 syllabus. And I would have regretted not seeing the film in its entire grandour, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but some day, and for the rest of my life.
